HEOL TELWEN, Breton for "The dark sun", had not really met Enrique’s axiomatic agreement, but still my interest was piqued enough to pay a visit to their full-length debut "An Deiz Ruz" and I must say that it was a damn good idea to do so, as this album really hit the bull’s eye with me!
The band, founded in 1999 in Breton town Blanc Mesnil, plays Celtic Black Metal, at least that is the description the have given themselves, and especially from France I have met several bands of late that really deserve this category, AES DANA, BELENOS and now HEOL TELWEN. Out of all of these I must say that HEOL TELWEN definitely is the best out of the bunch, for what the five gentlemen, who hide behind the pseudonyms Gwadsec'hedik Kraban (just rolls off your tongue, doesn’t it?), Yskithyrwynn, Hades, Ossian and Mylgaon Vibuc'h, fire off on this album is simply brilliant!
After the intro “An Douar Eleh Mon Ganet” with acoustic guitar and flute the title song breaks through with melodic Black Metal with flute and tin whistle, also with some light choir/clear vocals, always cleverly varying the tempo and somehow finding a distinctive style, very strong start for an album that is filled to the brim with bristling energy! The tin whistle shows up in a number of songs, lending them its pretty unique sound, especially when used as playful as for example in “Dahud”, simply sounds great!
“Ar Korrigan Du” maybe is THE highlight on "An Deiz Ruz", combining Melodic Black Metal, enriched with Celtic melodies and tin whistle, with purebred Folk Metal with tin whistle, flute, yes even bagpipe, brilliant piece! I could continue like this, mentioning most of the other songs as well, but that would in the end be too much for this review.
“An Deiz Ruz” is a truly great album, which should appeal to fans of Folk and Black Metal at the same time, as they masterfully understand how to integrate the Celtic melodies and instruments into the songs, therewith managing to set themselves apart from the more or less comparable bands.
A highlight of this genre, end of discussion! (Online April 7, 2006)[/quote]
